The Split Up viewers issue same plea as BBC series reaches climax

Fans of BBC's The Split Up made the same plea during the final episode. The new legal drama, a follow-up to The Split, came to an end on BBC One on Monday night. While the fortunes of the Defoes were followed during the original show, The Split Up has a brand-new family at the centre of the drama.

Fans Urge Aria to Choose Luke

This time round, viewers follow the Kishan family as Aria Kishan (played by Ritu Arya) prepares to take on the family law firm set up by her dad, Dhruv (Sanjeev Bhaskar). But the legal drama is also about love and loss too, and Aria is caught up in a love triangle with fiance Neal and old flame Luke, who comes back into her life.

In the final episode, which is also available on BBC iPlayer, the fate of Aria and Neal's wedding day was hanging in the balance as the Kishans navigated their new family dynamic. Viewers took to X - formerly Twitter - to air their thoughts as the series concluded, and most were adamant that Aria should call off the wedding for Luke.

Viewers React to the Finale

One posted: "Final ep time Will the wedding go ahead?? Pick Luke woman." A second asked: "Which way is Aria going to go." While another replied: "With Luke (100% emoji) please please (praying hands emojis)". A fourth joked: "Why don't they just do the whole throuple thing Everyone wins no?"

But their pleas fell on deaf ears as Aria went ahead with the wedding, though it was clear that she still harboured feelings for Luke. Before the credits rolled, one said: "Gotta be a follow up series.." Another shared: "Surely we're set up for a second season." While a third posted: "Well I enjoyed that good watch Hopefully there's a second season."

Creator and Cast Reflect

When details of The Split Up were announced earlier this year, original show creator Abi Morgan reflected on the Defoe family, which had the nation gripped almost a decade ago. She explained that even though she didn't want to carry on writing the original series, she knew there was 'more world and more stories' to be told, adding it was 'great' to see it being taken on by another team.

Meanwhile, Sanjeev Bhaskar had nothing but praise for The Split Up as he told the BBC: "I really loved the scripts and the ideas about this family. I'd seen The Split - all three series and the special. I had connections with that because Nicola Walker, who I've worked with quite a bit, was in it, and my wife Meera Syal was in the first series. I knew that the world would be interesting."

"I think the balance of family drama and the drama that conflict and secrets carry - I thought Ursula brought that to the table really well." The Split Up is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
