Former Take Me Out Contestant Lifts Lid on Reality TV Illusions
A former contestant from the popular dating show Take Me Out has shared startling revelations about the behind-the-scenes reality of appearing on the programme. John Harris, who participated as a student in 2011, has exposed several surprising aspects that contrast sharply with the glamorous image presented on television.
Motivations and Casting Strategies
Harris admitted that his primary motivation for joining the show was not to find love but rather because it "looked silly and fun." This casual approach proved fortunate, as he soon discovered that many female contestants were already in relationships and primarily seeking publicity rather than genuine romance.
He explained the casting methodology, stating: "They cast different characters in each episode. They would cast a gentleman, an interesting one, a quirky one, and then another good-looking fellow." This strategic approach to participant selection highlights the manufactured nature of reality television programming.
Production Realities and Unpaid Appearances
The filming process proved far more industrial than glamorous, with Harris revealing that studio recording took approximately an hour and required multiple trips in the single man lift to capture panning shots. Despite this significant time commitment, he received no payment for his participation.
Harris described the physical realities of filming: "It's just industrial and you have to climb up a ladder - it's nothing really. It only becomes glamorous when you see it on the telly." Even his outfit required unconventional preparation, with sanitary pads glued into his armpits to combat excessive sweating under studio lights.
The Isle of Fernando's Experience
After successfully matching with contestant Kerry, Harris was flown to the Isle of Fernando's the following day. However, the romantic getaway was far from intimate, as all matched couples from the series were filmed simultaneously at the location.
Remarkably, Harris confessed to forgetting his date's name by the time they reached the island, despite having met her just the day before. The couple engaged in mandatory tennis and dinner activities, but Harris revealed a crucial detail: "You don't actually get to eat any of the food. It's all for display."
Post-Show Reflections and Host Interactions
Reflecting on his experience, Harris acknowledged that while he had no regrets about choosing Kerry, he recognized that selecting the twin contestants would have made for better television. He maintained that his intentions remained focused on having fun rather than pursuing serious romance.
Harris praised host Paddy McGuinness for his supportive approach, describing him as "a make your life easier kind of person" who helped calm nervous contestants. Despite his youthful confidence, Harris admitted to being "probably a nervous wreck" during filming.
While Take Me Out is no longer available on mainstream streaming platforms, episodes and clips continue to circulate on YouTube, allowing audiences to revisit the show with new understanding of its production realities.
