I'm A Celebrity Campmate Faces Viewer Backlash Over 'Fake' Behaviour
Comedian Seann Walsh has been accused by furious viewers of faking his fears and playing up to the cameras during the latest episode of I'm A Celebrity... South Africa. The ITV show, which launched its second spin-off series earlier this month featuring past favourites, saw Walsh participate in the perilous Cut Throat Cliff trial on Tuesday night.
The High-Stakes Trial and Viewer Reactions
In the trial, Walsh was part of Harry Redknapp's Lion team alongside Sir Mo Farah, competing against Beverley Callard and Sinitta for Jimmy Bullard's Rhino team. The celebrities were suspended 140 feet above the ground off a cliff edge, answering general knowledge questions. Incorrect answers or correct answers from the opposing team required them to cut one of their support ropes.
Despite Walsh making his fear of heights clear during the challenge, many viewers took to social media to express doubts about his authenticity. One Reddit user started a thread titled 'I just cannot take to Seann', writing: 'I get this feeling he is being fake and playing up to the cameras. Especially the way he acted in the trial where Gemma eventually told him to shut up.'
Other comments included:
- 'He laughs so hard at absolutely everything and anything, I find it quite overbearing.'
- 'There's something very false about him. It feels like playing up to the camera.'
- 'After last night's episode where in the trial he was suspended, I'm now mixed on this as he was very annoying unfortunately!'
Mortifying Blunder During the Trial
The criticism intensified due to a notable blunder Walsh made during the trial. In a sneak peek, he was seen cutting one of his own ropes and exclaiming: 'Oh no, mummy no.' Presenters Ant and Dec then asked him to finish the lyrics to Toto's 1982 song 'Africa', with the line 'I bless the rain down in...'
Walsh quickly pressed his buzzer and shouted: 'Spain!' The presenters struggled to contain their laughter, with Dec correcting him: 'Africa!' Walsh defended himself by saying, 'I just thought it rhymed with rain!' but was forced to cut another rope as a penalty.
Upon returning to camp, Beverley Callard recounted the incident to her team, leaving them in hysterics. She said: 'They sang the first bit, Ant and Dec, they said the lyrics, and they said the rain in, you know, they did the lyrics, Seann went: Spain.'
Background and Series Context
Seann Walsh, a former Strictly Come Dancing star who originally entered the jungle in 2022, has been a polarising figure among viewers. Some have suggested he latches onto other campmates for airtime, with one viewer noting: 'Also I think he has latched onto Gemma because he knows she will get a lot of air time.'
The second series of I'm A Celebrity... South Africa continues to feature past campmates in a competitive format, with trials designed to test their nerves and knowledge. Walsh's performance has sparked debate about authenticity in reality television, with many questioning whether his reactions are genuine or exaggerated for entertainment.
As the series progresses on ITV1 and ITVX, viewers will be watching closely to see if Walsh's behaviour shifts or if the accusations of being 'false' persist. The incident highlights the intense scrutiny reality stars face from audiences, where every action is analysed for sincerity.
