James Mackenzie, the 'legendary' host of the 'iconic' BBC series Raven, looks ready for a comeback of the beloved show more than two decades after its debut. Many who grew up during the noughties still have fond memories of Raven, which aired on CBBC between 2002 and 2010.
Mackenzie's History with the Show
Mackenzie, a Scottish actor, took on the role of the titular character. He has actually reprised the character once before when the broadcaster brought it back for two more seasons in 2017. While they cast a new Raven, Mackenzie still made an appearance, this time as 'Raven of Old'.
It seems that he hasn't aged a day since the show began 24 years ago. So much so that he could probably bring back the character without anyone feeling like any time has really passed. Back in 2024, the actor even made the suggestion himself.
Fan Support for a Return
He posted on social media at the time: "Since Balamory has just got a recommission after 20 years, who’s up for pushing BBC for a Raven comeback?! Third time's a charm! The feathers still fit in case you’re wondering!"
It is a sentiment often repeated by long-time fans. One fan even suggested an updated adult version of the series with even more difficult challenges. Someone else argued that Mackenzie could play Raven in a drama series that follows the character's origin story.
Raven's Format and Mackenzie's Career
For those unfamiliar with the series, Raven was a game show that saw six children compete in a set of challenges. Over the rounds, one is eliminated as the least successful warrior, until only two are left and go to the final where the Ultimate Warrior will be crowned. Along the way they will also have to face off against Raven's nemesis Nevar, which is Raven spelt backwards.
Since Raven ended, Mackenzie has still worked in the world of children's TV and entertainment. He had a starring role in the series Molly and Mack as well as a number of CBeebies pantomimes and musicals including The Great Ice Cream Hunt, which was released in cinemas last year. He's also been a hit on the stage performing in spectacular Halloween and Pirates shows.
Warrior Wisdom and Fan Reactions
But he has never forgotten his role as Raven. While he has made appearances at conventions so fans can meet him in person, he also regularly shares videos on his Instagram page of himself in character. He posts them as 'Warrior Wisdom' and usually signs off with the catchphrase "let the challenge begin."
They are a huge hit with followers as one replied to a recent clip: "These videos make me so happy, thanks from a former child who adored the show!" Another said: "Once a legend, always a legend." Some episodes of Raven are streaming on BBC iPlayer.
