An Only Connect contestant put his head in his hands as he realised the answer to a question he had been stuck on. During Monday's episode, presented by Victoria Coren Mitchell, viewers met the competing teams, Culture Club and Ad Astra.
During the Connecting Wall round, Ad Astra found themselves baffled by one particular connection. The team struggled to identify the final word in a sequence of anagrams representing various starches and carbohydrates.
Team stumped by anagram sequence
They successfully identified - top oat - potato, tapas - pasta, and eric - rice. However, they couldn't locate the final word to complete the pattern, asking in exasperation: "What are we missing?".
Ad Astra featured David Howes, a retired RAF officer, Paul McMillan, an astrophysics lecturer, and their captain, Louise McMillan, a research development officer. Yet viewers watching from home found themselves 'screaming' at their television screens over the correct answer, which was beard - bread.
Viewers react on social media
Taking to Twitter, now X, one viewer declared: "I AM SCREAMING BREAD #onlyconnect" while another posted: "#OnlyConnect Shouting BEARD IS BREAD! ! over and over at my TV."
Another audience member posted: "Shouting BREAD repeatedly at the TV. #onlyconnect" while a separate show enthusiast remarked: "Only #onlyconnect has me shouting "Bread" at the TV."
Team triumphs despite struggle
Once the correct solutions were revealed on screen, contestant Paul exclaimed: "Bread, it's bread!" as he buried his face in his hands. Meanwhile, team captain Louise remarked: "Can't believe we didn't spot bread!"
Despite their difficulties with the Connecting Wall challenge, the squad ultimately triumphed, securing their progression to the subsequent round with 26 points. Culture Club, meanwhile, finished with 20 points. Only Connect continues on BBC Two.
