An Only Connect contestant has spoken out after an episode was branded the "worst ever" by viewers watching the BBC gameshow. The quiz show first started in 2008 on BBC Four and is now on BBC Two, hosted by Victoria Coren Mitchell.
On Monday (August 10) evening, the hit show was back as the teams Double Features and Colonial Geese went head to head. In the series, teams compete in a tournament of finding connections between seemingly unrelated clues. The title is said to be taken from a passage in E. M. Forster's 1910 novel Howards End: "Only connect the prose and the passion, and both will be exalted."
Viewers react to low scores
There are four rounds in total, and the team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner. If teams are tied, then a single sudden-death puzzle is given to the captains of each team. If a captain buzzes in first and gives the correct answer then their team wins, but an incorrect answer gives the win to the other team.
However, viewers quickly branded the installment as the "worst episode ever" based on how poorly the two teams played. One viewer even quipped that they had witnessed the "lowest score ever" in the show's history, reported Daily Express. Following on from a number of tasks on the gameshow, Colonial Geese only scored 16 points overall, while Double Features weren't far behind them with just 14 points.
Contestant responds on TikTok
During the episode, viewers made numerous comments. One fan quipped: "Think these contestants on #onlyconnect tonight meant to apply for Tipping Point." Someone else joked: "I honestly think that this episode is one of the pranks pulled by Ant and Dec to scupper certain hosts and fully expect them to appear shortly lol #onlyconnect."
Now, contestant Katie Rae Taylor has taken to her TikTok (@wonkytescostrolley) as she responded to viewers comments in the best way. Posting a gallery of pictures from her time on the BBC show as well as sharing some of the social media remarks, she captioned: "Victoria is just as lovely and beautiful in real life either way".
As one picture showed Katie on the panel with Daisy Jeavons and Mia Lewis, she quipped: "Took a bit too far and ended up on the 'worst episode ever' of a show but at least we had a hoot!!!!" She continued to show snaps from filming as she added: "Smile so full of light and joy... little did she know..." and "just happy to be here", Katie ended her response with a tweet from @fletcherchriss which read: "This is the worst episode of #onlyconnect ever".
