The Met Office has said parts of the UK could see highs of 27C on Tuesday before rainy conditions affect four areas of the country. A low-pressure system in the Atlantic is set to bring warmer air from Europe, but conditions are expected to turn unsettled as a weather front gradually passes from west to east late on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Notable temperatures for late September
Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon told the Press Association that a high of 27C is expected in London on Tuesday, which he said is “notable for this time of year” and will feel “fairly unseasonable for many”.
“By later on Tuesday evening, we start to see the arrival of rain to western areas, where some western upslopes could see rainfall totals of between 20 and 30mm of rain,” he added. He said they are particularly thinking about “areas to the south west of England, parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland, that front of rain will gradually move eastwards Tuesday night and into Wednesday”.
Wet and blustery Wednesday
Mr Dixon said the temperature will remain “fairly high” on Tuesday night into Wednesday, with a minimum of 19C expected in some places. “An overnight low of 19C again would be notable for the time of year and could feel a touch uncomfortable for some, particularly as we’re in late September,” he added.
Mr Dixon said many areas of the UK will see rain on Wednesday, adding that it is going to be a “fairly wet and blustery day for many”. He added that gusty winds are possible and that there is a chance of “some very large waves for some western coastal areas”.
Around 10mm of rain is expected in some places, with in excess of 40mm possible in some spots. Gusty winds exceeding 50mph are possible.
Sunshine and showers ahead
After that, Thursday and Friday look set to be days of “sunshine and showers” and “mixed conditions”, he added. Higher pressure will build in the UK over the weekend, bringing more settled conditions.
In a post on X, the Met Office said the week promises “remarkable temperatures, big waves and a bit of heavy rain too”. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: “As this weather front moves gradually from west to east late on Tuesday and Wednesday, many places will see around 10mm of rain, with in excess of 40mm possible in some isolated spots in south-facing hills in the west. This period of weather will also see gusty winds, with gusts over 50mph possible, particularly on exposed coasts in the northwest. Large waves are likely to affect some coasts in the west, coinciding with high spring tides.”
