Married At First Sight Australia's Sam Stanton has opened up about the real reason behind his 'agonising' split from husband Chris Robinson, revealing that it was not due to Chris's parental responsibilities as hinted on the show. In an interview with TV WEEK, Sam claimed that Chris had simply given up on their marriage and was unwilling to work on the relationship.
Sam, 38, explained that cracks appeared after he outlined his vision for their future without consulting Chris, 34. The spin instructor felt blindsided by the plan, which would require significant sacrifice, and their communication broke down. Despite a heated conversation that resolved nothing, Sam was shocked when Chris wrote 'leave' at the commitment ceremony, sending shockwaves through the experiment.
Sam said: 'He had given up. I went into that commitment ceremony hoping to get feedback. Whatever that was, I was going to put it into practice the next week. Chris must have gone into it thinking that I was going to be completely in the wrong – or maybe he just did not care at all, or he wasn’t willing to work on himself.'
Sam also blamed Chris's defensive attitude and harsh language for the breakdown, stating that he felt no empathy from him. 'He snapped at me for calling him not empathetic. He said his sister says he’s empathetic, his mum says he’s empathetic. At one point I put my hands up and I’m just like, ‘I’m not really used to being spoken to like this,' Sam recalled.
