MAFS Australia's Bec Issues Apology for Vulgar Retreat Comment
Married at First Sight Australia's annual couples retreat proved anything but relaxing as tensions flared between contestants Bec Zacharia and Rachel Gilmore. The drama unfolded when Bec made a controversial comment about Rachel's intimate life with her husband Steven Danyluk, leading to a public apology and ongoing fallout.
Shocking Disclosure at Group Gathering
During the retreat, Bec Zacharia took it upon herself to share with the entire group that Rachel Gilmore and Steven Danyluk had progressed in their intimacy after recent struggles to connect in the bedroom. This disclosure left many attendees stunned, with jaws dropping across the room as the private matter became public knowledge.
While some members of the group were already aware of the couple's progress, they expressed shock when Bec announced it to everyone else present. The incident quickly escalated, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere that overshadowed the retreat's intended purpose of fostering connection among the participants.
Apology and Context Revealed
Bec Zacharia has since apologised to Rachel Gilmore for what she described as her "vulgar" comment during the retreat. The apology came after it was revealed that an unaired conversation between Bec and Steven occurred prior to her controversial speech, providing additional context to the situation.
Appearing together on the After The Dinner Party show, Rachel, Steven, and Bec addressed the eventful trip with all the brides and grooms. Rachel admitted she would have "squashed" the issue earlier with Bec if she had known about the conversation between Bec and Steven before her speech.
"Genuinely, like, it kind of gives context because then I would have gone out of my way then to approach Bec and like, 'I get why you've said it now', I could have squashed it. I was overreacting," Rachel explained during the show.
Differing Perspectives on the Incident
Bec immediately interrupted Rachel's statement, disagreeing with her assessment. "No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, you're not overreacting, because what you feel is what you feel and you are allowed to feel what you feel," Bec asserted.
She continued, "What I said was completely politically incorrect. I have the most vulgar sense of humour." Bec added that she wouldn't allow Rachel to "blame" herself for the situation, emphasising that she was the one who made the comment and should bear responsibility.
Unaired Conversation Adds Complexity
The unaired conversation shows Steven sitting and chatting with Bec and Alissa Fay. Before Bec says to him, "I'm so glad you got...stuck a finger in babes..." Steven questioned her, asking: "How do you know it's even one finger?"
Bec immediately responded, "I guessing it's two", before adding that she was "so happy" for the couple. This exchange reveals that Steven participated in the joking atmosphere that preceded Bec's public disclosure.
Rachel's Feelings of Betrayal
After watching the conversation unfold, Rachel admitted she initially thought Steven had "supported" her. However, she realised he essentially created an environment in which jokes could be openly made about their intimate life.
She told Mamamia: "In private, Steven was telling me how crude Bec is and how she was 'bang out of line'... Well, you said it too, sweetie. He never owned it. He let Bec take the fall."
In the same interview, Rachel expressed that while Bec apologised, she didn't believe she was "sorry for the impact" of her comment. Rachel elaborated: "She was sorry for the intent — the joke — but she wasn't sorry for the impact. The impact was that I felt humiliated and shamed."
"A joke at my expense — especially one that is extremely sexual and puts my body on display — is not okay," Rachel emphasised, highlighting the emotional toll of the incident.
Ongoing Repercussions
The incident has created lasting tension among the participants, with Rachel feeling particularly vulnerable after the public disclosure of intimate details. Despite Bec's apology, the emotional impact continues to affect their relationship and the group dynamics within the Married at First Sight Australia experiment.
Married at First Sight Australia continues to air Monday to Thursday on E4 at 7.30pm, with viewers watching how these interpersonal conflicts develop throughout the season.
