Martin Kemp, former Spandau Ballet star and EastEnders actor, is set to appear in a new travel documentary with his son Roman. The show, Martin and Roman's Irish Road Trip, airs tonight, Monday, August 10, at 8pm on Channel 4. The pair will explore Ireland's landscapes, mysteries, and legends.
Family Life and Famous Connections
Martin is married to Shirlie Holliman, a former backing singer for WHAM!. The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in St Lucia in 1988. Martin has credited George Michael, Shirlie's bandmate, with bringing them together. He revealed on I'm A Celebrity that George acted as a "wingman" on their first date, even dialing Shirlie's number when she hesitated to call Martin.
The couple has two children: country singer Harley Moon and radio presenter Roman Kemp, who is also a co-star on Celebrity Gogglebox. Roman has spoken warmly about his father, saying on the High Performance podcast, "My dad's always been my best mate. He's always validated every emotion that I've ever felt."
Health Struggles and Accidents
Martin, now 64, has faced significant health challenges. In 1995, he was diagnosed with two benign brain tumors. One was surgically removed, and a titanium plate was implanted. The other was treated with radiation. He developed epilepsy and a form of dyslexia as a result of the surgery.
He also revealed on Loose Women that he has three kidneys, a rare anomaly, while his brother Gary has one. Last year, Martin injured his fingers with a chainsaw while gardening at his Hertfordshire home. Roman said on the You About podcast that Martin was "lucky not to lose his hand" and advised hiring a professional.
Spandau Ballet Reunion Rumors
Spandau Ballet, known for hits like "True" and "Gold," may be reuniting for a comeback tour. They last performed together in 2018 without lead singer Tony Hadley. A music industry source told Cover Media that talks have "gone better than anyone expected" and a tour announcement is expected "very soon."
