Jonah's dark past to be exposed in Hollyoaks, actor teases

Hollyoaks viewers are set to uncover more about Jonah Keane's past, with actor Matthew Wolfenden teasing that the character has 'a few skeletons in the closet'.

In recent scenes, Jonah has taken horrifying action to keep his son Caleb (Lewis Walton) close by drugging him, but there is more to be revealed about the character's history.

Backstory teased

Speaking to Metro at the Cure Usher Ball, Matthew said: 'Without giving too much away, over the next few months, we're going to find out about Jonah's backstory, and there's a few skeletons in the closet, put it that way!'

Matthew started filming at Hollyoaks eight months ago, with Jonah first appearing on screens in April 2026. However, this is not Matthew's first soap role – soap fans will remember him as Emmerdale's David Metcalfe, a character he played from 2006 until 2023.

Age gap at Hollyoaks

Reflecting on the transition, Matthew admitted: 'I started at Emmerdale when I was 25/26, and I always felt like one of the younger ones there, even after 18 years. I know I got older through the years!'

'But then I go to Hollyoaks and the cast is so young, I'm like Grandad there now! Such a different vibe going into the green room, it's all youngens in there. But it's brilliant, I'm loving it. I've been there eight months now and it's fab.'

Emmerdale reunion

The Cure Usher Ball saw the actor reunite with some of his Emmerdale co-stars, who he revealed he still keeps in touch with. 'It's nice to catch up with everyone,' he said of seeing people in person.

The cast were there to support co-stars Laura Norton and Mark Jordon, who organised the ball in support of the Cure Usher Syndrome charity. Usher Syndrome is a rare genetic condition that causes hearing and vision loss and, in some cases, affects balance. There is currently no cure.

In 2023, Laura and Mark shared the news that their children, Jesse, 5, and Ronnie, 3, had been diagnosed with Usher Syndrome.
