Joe Lycett was left speechless watching back his exchange with Richard E Grant on the opening episode of Celebrity Traitors, in which the actor revealed his role as a Traitor moments after being selected.
The second season of the BBC game show began on October 1, with singer-songwriter James Blunt, TV presenter Ross Kemp and actor Bella Ramsey among the contestants. Claudia Winkleman returned as host.
Richard E Grant's slip-up
Maya Jama and Richard E Grant were chosen as the two Traitors. Shortly after the selection, comedian Joe Lycett asked the actor directly whether he was a Traitor or a Faithful, and Richard immediately revealed the truth, saying "Traitor!" enthusiastically.
The players in the room, including Rob Beckett and James Blunt, were stunned. A shocked Joe asked again: "You're what?" Richard then confirmed: "Traitor, what's the point of being the game if you're not?"
Joe Lycett's reaction
Richard later described it as "the biggest mistake I have ever made in my life," admitting he had been caught up in the excitement of getting the role. In a piece to the cameras, he said: "I was so thrilled to have been chosen as a Traitor, that in my unguarded excitement, I said, Of course, I'm a Traitor."
Tonight's episode of Joe's Channel 4 show Live From The Lycett Arms (October 2) features him watching the first episode as it aired, alongside famous faces including Aisling Bea and The Traitors series four winner, Stephen Libby.
