Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) has accidentally killed Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) in Emmerdale, after overhearing Todd's vicious verbal attack on her grandma Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins). The shocking death occurred during a final showdown between Charity and Todd, leaving both Charity and Sarah to face the police with a cover story devised by Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy).
Sarah's Discovery and Todd's Blackmail
Sarah already knew Todd was a vicious and vindictive character, having watched her husband Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant) have his confidence destroyed by Todd's bullying. However, she was unaware that Todd had turned her attention to Charity after learning that Leyla, the baby Charity was carrying, was not the result of an implanted embryo belonging to Sarah and Jacob, but rather the product of a one-night stand between Charity and Ross Barton (Michael Parr).
Todd then launched a vicious blackmail campaign against Charity, attempting to extort as much money as possible. When Charity finally dared Todd to expose the truth, Todd committed her most sickening act yet by raping a drunken and vulnerable Charity.
Charity's Struggle and Recovery
In the aftermath of the assault, Charity's mental health plummeted. She was forced to pretend she was suffering from postnatal depression, leaving Sarah riddled with guilt as she tried to keep the rape a secret. Charity found no solace in a support group, and with the Crown Prosecution Service unwilling to press charges against Todd, she was hit with blow after blow before finding comfort in the words of then-stranger Serena Sugden.
Despite the case against Todd falling apart, Charity began to rebuild herself and was recovering from the trauma until Todd reappeared, setting a final showdown in motion. During the confrontation, Todd's cruel jibes played into every fear and doubt Charity held about herself following the rape, but Todd underestimated Charity's inner strength. Charity reclaimed her power from the villain, but then Sarah entered.
The Fatal Shove and Aftermath
Overhearing the ordeal her grandma had been subjected to and angered by further vitriol from Todd, Sarah shoved the doctor, causing Todd to smash her head on a table and fall to the floor, dead. Serena then helped them come up with a convincing story to tell the police, but as police descend on the village, it becomes painfully evident that life will never be the same for Charity or Sarah again.
