Coronation Street has confirmed Bethany Platt's future in a shock pregnancy storyline. Speaking about the plot, actress Lucy Fallon told the ECHO and other press "it's not going to end well". In a twisted turn of events, Bethany is pregnant and her mum's ex-partner Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) is the biological dad.
Lucy Fallon has starred in the Manchester-based soap since 2015 as the daughter of soap icon Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien). The 30-year-old shares two children in real life with her partner, footballer Ryan Ledson. But Bethany has been up to mischief while her mum is behind bars for killing Theo Silverton. Viewers discovered Bethany had a one night stand with her mum's ex-partner, while she was still living in his apartment.
Actress reacts to shocking twist
Speaking of the controversial fling, Lucy said: "I don't actually know what she was thinking. I think they both were in quite a bad place at the time. They were obviously in the flat together." She added: "They were trying to deal with a lot of stuff together and I think it was just one of those things that happened. It just happened."
Lucy believes Bethany doesn't have any romantic feelings for the local copper, as they were both in a difficult place the night it happened. She fears her character will get a lot of hate in the coming weeks, as fans have started to react to the news Bethany is carrying Kit's baby.
The 30-year-old actress said: "When our producer Kate was telling me what was happening and then she said that she ends up being pregnant, my jaw was on the floor."
Bethany's difficult decision
"I think it's so good in the sense that now they have got to face the consequences of what they've done and they can't just brush it under the carpet in the way that they wanted to. It's adding a whole other level of drama for the audience."
"She's obviously in shock, I think she kind of had a little idea that she potentially was pregnant but when it's confirmed I think she's shocked and devastated because it's not a situation that she wants to be in."
"Obviously, she's got to make a decision whether she goes ahead with it or whether she gets a termination and that's quite traumatic in itself. So she's left with a big decision now."
What it means for Ryan
The news completely takes Bethany by surprise as she is hoping to move further with her connection with Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott). Lucy said: "Her and Ryan are going quite well. I think she genuinely really likes him and he genuinely really likes her too."
"They've got a bit of shared history as well from when they were together before but obviously this is going to throw a massive spanner in the works. If she chooses to go through with the termination that will make things easier for their relationship."
"But if she chooses to keep the baby, that's going to complicate the whole situation because is Ryan going to want to be with her if she's going to be having someone else's baby when they're so early on in their relationship?"
Whether Bethany will decide to keep the baby is left in the open, but whatever happens it will cause chaos among the Platts. Lucy said: "There's so many ways this could go, if and when it all comes out, it's going to be so good and really fun to play." Coronation Street airs weekdays at 8.30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
