Coronation Street viewers believe they have identified Bernie Winter's biological mother, suggesting the mystery character is a familiar face from the cobbles. The speculation follows Bernie's recent mention of her estranged mother, who has never appeared on screen.
Bernie, played by actress who rose to fame on the ITV soap since her debut in 2019, is the mother of Gemma (Dolly-Rose Campbell), Paul (Peter Ash) and Kit (Jacob Roberts). She has become a firm favourite among viewers and has been central to major storylines, including Paul's death from MND and her wedding to Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin).
Aunt Celeste's bombshell
Recently, Bernie's estranged aunt Celeste Butterfield (Frances Barber) arrived on the street, revealing she had only weeks to live. Due to a long-standing family feud, Bernie wanted nothing to do with Celeste, who has since passed away.
Before her death, Celeste disclosed she had breast cancer, news that has sent shockwaves through the family, leaving them all potentially at risk of carrying the disease. Following this revelation, in Monday's episode (August 31), Bernie went to the local medical centre for testing but found it closed.
Fans' theory
While chatting to Dev, Bernie referenced her estranged mother. Dev asked: "Have you considered trying to find out about your mum?" Bernie replied: "What, find out if she's dead or alive? I'd rather not know, thanks. Used to call her The Disappearing Act, so let's just leave that there."
Now, fans are speculating that Bernie's biological mum could be Vera Duckworth (Liz Dawn). On a Coronation Street Facebook fan page, one viewer wrote: "Have we ever seen Bernie's mum?" A second chimed in: "No but I'd like for it to be someone that used to be on the show." A third added: "Vera!" Another fan wrote: "That would be epic!" Someone else said: "Good thinking."
Vera's legacy
Vera, a soap legend, debuted in 1974. Wed to Jack (Bill Tarmey), she featured in countless storylines, including her marriage and their time running the Rovers Return. In 2008, the character died peacefully in her sleep due to heart failure. Liz reprised the role in 2010 when Jack died on screen. Liz herself passed away in 2017 at 77.
