Corrie fans predict Gail return for Sarah's Christmas release

Coronation Street viewers believe they have worked out a major Christmas storyline for the cobbles, which could see the return of a Weatherfield favourite. The festive season is rarely peaceful on the ITV soap, with past Christmases featuring dramatic arrivals, including David Platt (Jack P Shepherd), and heartbreaking departures.

This year's Christmas looks set to follow suit, with fans convinced a former cobbles icon might make a comeback in a significant Sarah Platt (Tina O'Brien) development. Sarah is currently imprisoned following the killing of villainous Theo Silverton (James Cartwright) in self-defence.

Sarah's imprisonment and fan theories

Sarah ended Theo's life in April when she struck him with a metal pole atop scaffolding, causing him to plummet over the edge to the ground. She subsequently sought assistance from ex-partner and friend Gary Windass (Mikey North) to conceal the incident. Despite police officer boyfriend Kit Green's (Jacob Roberts) efforts to help her evade justice, Sarah was detained on suspicion of Theo's murder, reports the Daily Star.

She has now been remanded in custody while awaiting trial. However, fans are speculating that Sarah's possible release from prison might align with the soap's Christmas narrative and the return of a cobbles icon.

Gail Platt's potential comeback

"What's everyone's prediction for Christmas on Corrie?" asked one member of a Coronation Street Facebook fan page. Another chimed in: "I think Sarah will be out of prison by then." A third viewer then floated the idea that Sarah's mum Gail Platt (Helen Worth) could make an unexpected return: "Same, maybe Gail will come back." A fourth concurred, exclaiming: "Yes I thought that!"

Back in June 2024, it was revealed that Gail actress Helen Worth was leaving the long-running soap, with Helen saying she felt it was the "perfect time" to depart "the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world". Gail's exit storyline revolved around her marriage to Jesse Chadwick (John Thomson). On Christmas Day 2024, Gail said her goodbyes in a touching hour-long special episode, as she and Jesse headed off to France to embark on a new life together.

Coronation Street airs Monday to Friday at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
