Coleen Rooney told Wayne "you can't keep doing this" as the couple shared an insight into their relationship in their Disney Plus series, The Real Rooneys. Eight episodes of the show have landed on the streaming platform today.
The couple live in a Cheshire mansion with their four sons, Kai, Klay, Kit and Cass. The new reality series follows the family during a pivotal year in their lives.
Beach confrontation in Portugal
The fifth episode shows the Rooneys heading to Portugal for a family holiday. But Coleen was disappointed when Wayne stayed out all night drinking with his friends. The mum-of-four decided to confront her husband, and the conversation was captured by camera crew.
As the pair sat on the beach, Coleen asked the former Manchester United star: "Have you been dying today on this beach? Because you don't like the beach and you've had hardly any sleep." Wayne said: "No, I'm fine" before Coleen said: "It's been a bit of a lads' holiday for you hasn't it, staying up all night with your mates."
Wayne explained he finds it difficult to stay busy during the off-season from football. He said: "It's hard. I said to you before that when the season has finished now I'm not working, I'm not doing anything. It's tough."
Coleen's emotional plea
Coleen was having none of it, as she said: "I know but how many years have you had to get used to it. Every time you're off you can't just keep doing what you do, especially when it's meant to be a family holiday cause it's not fair on everyone else."
She added: "You wonder why I moan and I get called the moaner off everyone but it's me picking up the pieces all the time. But you're making it harder for me. [What if] I just never come home and don't get up in the morning and take care of the kids. What would the kids do then? No one's making you do it but it never changes it. It always happens and it's just like 'Well is that going to be life?' It's only you that can fix it because no one else can do it."
Coleen walked away from the conversation when Wayne ignored her comments and simply asked: "What time's the restaurant booked?"
Thoughts of separation
Speaking to the cameras, Coleen opened up about how she really feels about their relationship. She said: "The thing is, he's not an arguer and sometimes I do want him to give me something back. Sometimes it's just like arguing with a brick wall."
She continued: "I still love him, but sometimes I think 'Is the answer to see what it's like if we were separated?' At this moment in time, we're not best friends. I'm just hoping that things change."
Asked why she loves Wayne, Coleen said: "I don't know. I think I've been asked that a lot of times over the years. You can't help loving someone can you. That's the thing, he can be annoying and he can be a pain in the a***, but he is a good dad and he is funny, he does make us laugh. It's all down to love."
Wayne said: "I know myself there's things I can do better, so there's no point in arguing is there."
The couple have been married since 2008 after starting a relationship in their teens. Wayne retired from football in January 2021 at the age of 35 and now works as a TV pundit. In 2024, Coleen appeared as a contestant on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here where she finished in second place.
The Real Rooneys follows the couple over the course of a year while Wayne steps away from football management, swapping the touchline for school runs, while Coleen embraces the biggest opportunities of her career. The Real Rooneys is streaming exclusively on Disney+ from September 24.
