BBC to rest DIY SOS in 2027 amid cost-cutting, plans spin-off

The BBC has confirmed it will rest DIY SOS in 2027, with a new spin-off show commissioned in its place as part of cost-saving measures. The long-running home improvement programme, which has aired for 27 years, will be replaced by a series titled DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life (working title), which will revisit past successes from the show.

BBC confirms spin-off plans

A BBC spokesperson said: “In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin off show instead from producers South Shore. DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life (w/t) will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year.”

The announcement follows reports that the show had been cancelled. One source told The Sun: “We were told it was being paused, but when we asked whether it would come back in 2028 or 2029 they couldn’t give us an answer.”

Reaction from the team

The source added: “It’s a disgusting outrage that a BBC show, which genuinely helps some of the neediest people in our country, is being shut down because it’s basically seen as ‘too expensive’. DIY SOS is one of the few shows on television that genuinely represents working-class people. Thousands of tradesmen and women offer their time, and often the materials, for free to people in need, even when they’re struggling to make ends meet themselves.”

An insider also claimed that presenter Nick Knowles is upset by the decision. “Nick and the entire team are devastated,” they said. “The decision, they were told, is down to cost-savings being needed. To them it’s a slap in the face because so many people give their time and materials for nothing. Tears have been shed by all.”

Recent emotional episode

In a recent episode broadcast on Tuesday, October 13, Nick Knowles and the team arrived in Preston to help married couple Nigel and Julie Flemen and their three children, Emily, Charlotte and Daniel. In October 2022, when Daniel was 13, he developed symptoms initially mistaken for an ear infection and tonsillitis. It was discovered he had a brain tumour requiring emergency surgery, and he later suffered a severe stroke that left him with life-altering disabilities. He remained in hospital because the family home was not accessible.

The team aimed to adapt the bungalow to accommodate Daniel’s needs so he could come home. However, Nick identified concerning issues during the inspection. “For us to do this in eight days, we'd literally have to take the roof off and rebuild it in a day, or we wouldn't get it done. Nobody does that. Nobody's ever done that,” he said. He ultimately took on the job, recognising how “ambitious” the challenge was.
