The Lion Tavern, a Grade II-listed pub in Liverpool's Moorfields area, has been serving drinkers for generations, with roots believed to date back to the 1840s. The pub's distinctive wooden interior dates back to 1914.
General manager Mark Jones, 53, originally from Maghull but now living in the city centre, has been in the role since August last year. He spoke about the pub's history, the secret to running a good pub, and how drinking habits have changed in the area.
Historic pub with 50 Irish whiskeys
Jones said the building is believed to date back to 1841, and by 1891 maps showed it as The Lion Tavern. A licensee was recorded at the address in the 1840s.
The pub is known for its range of whiskey, with about 50 different Irish whiskeys available. This attracts American tourists, particularly when cruise ships come in, as they love traditional pubs and buildings.
Famous guests and best-selling drinks
Actor Ian Hart, from Harry Potter, visits occasionally for Everton games, and Michael Fassbender comes in for Liverpool games, always with a cap pulled down and collar turned up. Ex-Liverpool player Sammy Lee and ex-Everton player Peter Reid have also visited.
The best-selling cask beer is a bitter called Otter, which is almost permanently on tap because regulars complain when it's taken off. Guinness remains extremely popular, with demand sometimes hard to keep up with.
Changing lunchtime trade
Jones noted that the business district has changed since Covid, with fewer people returning to the office five days a week. Lunchtime trade is quieter than it used to be, with younger people walking past with gym kits while older regulars still come for lunchtime pints.
To counter this, the pub hosts a folk music club once a month, a charity quiz, and trade unions use the back room for meetings and parties.
Jones said the quality and range of beer keep people coming back, with cask beers changing every other day. He encouraged people to support their local pub by calling in once a week, noting that new customers often become regulars within a week.
