The BBC competition series Race Against the Tide, filmed in Scotland, begins tonight. The show features seven teams of two attempting to build the most impressive sand sculptures before the tide washes them away. Each team pairs a professional sculptor with a complete beginner.
Acclaimed artist and sculptor Sadie Clayton and internationally renowned sand sculptor Jamie Wardley judge the contestants on technical skill and wow factor, while Scottish comedian Iain Stirling hosts. Teams that fail to impress are eliminated from the show.
Where Was the Show Filmed?
The entire six-part series is available on BBC iPlayer from today (August 17), with the first episode airing tonight at 8.30pm on BBC Scotland. Filming took place at West Sands Beach in St Andrews, a location known for nearly two miles of uninterrupted sands.
The specific filming spot was between dune paths 11 and 13, towards the north end of the beach.
Production Team Comments
Tern Television's creative director, David Marshall, said: "People know St Andrews as the Home of Golf. We reckon it's about time it became the home of giant sandcastles too." He added: "Race Against the Tide is funny, feel-good and might just be the greenest entertainment format in the world. It's exactly the kind of bold, returnable entertainment that we're investing in as Tern enters its next chapter."
Steve Allen, BBC Scotland's commissioning executive, commented: "The series combines creativity, teamwork and real jeopardy against the spectacular backdrop of one of Scotland's most iconic locations, West Sands Beach in St Andrews. It's a feel-good competition that celebrates imagination and the great outdoors, and we're sure it will bring a little extra sunshine to audiences this summer."
Race Against the Tide is now streaming on BBC iPlayer and broadcasts on BBC Scotland at 8.30pm tonight (August 17).
