BBC announcer apologises after Celebrity Traitors prank

BBC One Wales viewers tuning in for the latest episode of The Celebrity Traitors were given a taste of deception before the programme had even started. The sixth episode of the latest series was due to air at 9pm on Friday, October 16, but announcer Danny Cowan initially suggested that the BBC had made a last-minute change to its schedule, leaving some viewers wondering whether they would miss out on the hit reality show.

Prank announcement

Instead of introducing the celebrity competition, he told audiences: “First on BBC One Wales, in a change to what you might have been expecting, it's The Repair Shop.” However, the apparent switch was nothing more than a joke, as initially reported by Wales Online. After a short pause, Danny reassured viewers they were getting their weekly fix of the hit TV show. He added: “Just kidding, I wouldn't do that. I'm not a traitor, honest.”

Fortunately for fans, The Celebrity Traitors was not replaced by The Repair Shop, and the episode went ahead as planned.

Viewer reactions and apology

One viewer from Wales said: "I literally had a mini panic attack, I was about to change the channel over. You're such a tease." Taking to X, he apologised, saying: "Apologies to viewers in the Welsh Wales ... I was just having a wee bit of fun with #CelebrityTraitors #CelebrityTraitorsUK ... Probably in a lot of trouble now, at least you know I'm not AI! Love ya."

The joke was taken lightly as some BBC watchers requested more of the same going forward, even suggesting more funny antics. One viewer suggested: "We loved it. Could do with more of it. Like a graphic violence warning at the start of Antiques Roadshow or Gardeners World."

Episode cliffhanger

Friday’s episode of The Celebrity Traitors saw comedian Joe Lycett banished from the castle after fellow contestants became suspicious of him, only for him to reveal he was a faithful. YouTuber King Kenny was recruited as a Traitor, joining Maya Jama and James Acaster following Hannah Fry’s departure. The episode ended on a cliff hanger as the traitors attempted an unusual murder plot involving making a faithful yawn using a special powder, leaving viewers waiting to discover whether their plan would succeed.
