BBC Radio 2 presenter Vernon Kay has revealed he recently faced a gentle reprimand from his wife, television host Tess Daly, over his decidedly relaxed approach to weekend fashion.
A Sunday Scolding Over Style
Speaking on his popular morning show, Vernon recounted a trip to his local B&Q DIY store. The former model admitted he left the house without a second glance in the mirror, dressed in a hoodie, bobble hat, and joggers. He knew this choice would not meet the approval of his wife, whom he affectionately still refers to as "Strictly Come Dancing's Tess Daly".
"She'd say 'You went out like that? Did anyone see you?'" Vernon confessed, mimicking the expected reaction from the style-conscious Tess. The outing, however, took an unexpected turn that highlighted his deep connection with the Radio 2 audience.
An Unseen Connection with Listeners
As Vernon wandered the aisles, a couple passed him by. Moments later, without making eye contact, a voice called out, "See you on Monday morning, Vern!" Vernon simply replied, "Yep, tune in every morning."
He described the fleeting exchange as a brilliant, matey moment that underscored the show's wide reach. "It was just like two mates from school, or work, who see each other on a regular basis every day of the week," he reflected.
Tess Daly's New Chapter After Strictly
The incident comes as Tess Daly herself is navigating a significant career shift. The mum-of-two sensationally quit her role as co-host of Strictly Come Dancing at the end of last year, after an incredible 21-year run fronting the BBC juggernaut.
She is now channelling her energy into new ventures. Chief among them is her own sportswear line, NAIA Active, which follows the successful launch of her swimwear brand, NAIA Beach, in 2021. Tess revealed to Hello! Magazine that she had been working 15-hour days until Christmas to prepare for the launch, calling the business her "baby" and not merely an endorsement deal.
She also teased a return to television screens, hinting that "there are a couple [of projects] in the pipeline." Reflecting on her career and life in her 50s, Tess said, "I have so much life experience under my belt, and I enjoy the wisdom that comes with that. There's a calmness that comes with it that is very welcome."
Following her emotional final Strictly show, which featured a surprise message from Queen Camilla, Tess posted a heartfelt tribute on Instagram. She praised the show as one "made with love, where joy is the currency" and expressed being "forever grateful for the unforgettable years."
