Sam Neill, the beloved actor best known for playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, has died at the age of 78. His family announced his passing on his Instagram account on Monday, July 13, 2026, stating: "It is with immense sadness that the whanau (family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life."
Career and Cancer Battle
Neill first appeared on New Zealand television in the 1970s and landed his first major role as the adult Antichrist Damien Thorn in Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981). He reprised his role as Dr. Alan Grant in two later Jurassic Park sequels. In 2022, he was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Earlier this year, he revealed he was cancer-free after undergoing a new treatment. Speaking to Australian network 7 News, he said: "I've just had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body, that's an extraordinary thing."
Event Horizon Flag Detail Resurfaces
Following the news of his death, fans rediscovered a hidden detail about Neill's character in the 1997 sci-fi horror Event Horizon. In the film, each astronaut wears a patch representing their country of origin. Neill's character, Dr. William Weir, wears an Australian flag with a notable difference: the Union Flag in the top left corner is replaced by the Australian Aboriginal flag. The Aboriginal flag is split horizontally black and red with a yellow circle in the center, representing the Aboriginal people, the earth, and the sun.
A tweet by Welsh user @Jayfuz from 2020 resurfaced, stating: "Today I learnt: For the Sci-Fi Horror film 'Event Horizon' Sam Neill requested that the Australian flag on his character's uniform remove the Union Flag from the corner and for it to be replaced with the Aboriginal flag, the way he thought it should look in 2047." Neill himself replied to confirm: "This is indeed so. And I wouldn't do it any differently today."
Upcoming Projects
Fans can still look forward to Neill's posthumous appearances in the monster action blockbuster Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and the romantic comedy The Last Resort, both set for release next year.
