Merrick Watts' 2026 Starts with Hospital Dash After Gruesome Running Injury
Merrick Watts' 2026 Starts with Hospital Dash After Injury

The dawn of 2026 brought a painful and unexpected turn for Australian comedian and former radio host Merrick Watts. The 52-year-old took to social media on New Year's Day to share the graphic details of a serious injury sustained while hosting a community run, an incident that culminated in a rushed trip to hospital for emergency treatment.

A New Year's Day Run Turns Sour

Watts was leading the Rando Run in the Sydney beachside suburb of Maroubra when the accident occurred. In an Instagram video prefaced with a stark trigger warning, the funnyman recounted his ordeal. "I just got back from the Rando Run which did not go according to plan," he began, explaining he had ended up in emergency and undergone quick surgery.

The clip cut to footage of a motivated Watts leading a pack of fitness enthusiasts, captioned 'Seconds from disaster'. The run came to an abrupt halt after Watts, while filming the participants, took a nasty tumble. "That was a good start. What happened here fellas? Someone was filming themselves and tripped on that step," he quipped, despite the pain.

Graphic Injury and Swift Hospital Response

The camera then panned to a deep, bloody gash on his knee. "Warning that is a f***ing deep cut," Watts stated bluntly. Assessing the damage, he told the other runners, "Oooh, that's going to require some stitches. So boys, I reckon you go for a run and I'll see you at the hospital."

His wife, Georgie, promptly picked him up, declaring the accident the "most Merrick Watts thing ever." Further hospital footage showed Watts on a bed with the wound exposed. When asked by a nurse to bend his knee, he dryly observed, "I reckon that's more than a Band-Aid."

Unfazed Aftermath and a Flashback to the 'El Maco Incident'

Even after being stitched up at Maroubra Urgent Care, Watts appeared remarkably unfazed. He joked with staff, declaring, "I feel like I could go on another run. Should I go on another run?" A nurse swiftly replied, "Please don't do that." Not stopping there, he then asked, "What about ketamine? Can I have some ketamine?" – a request that was flatly refused.

The incident prompted a recollection of another notorious career moment. Watts recently recalled on the Friendlyjordies Podcast the time he and his former Nova co-host Tim 'Rosso' Ross cost the network an estimated $1 million. Early in their career, during a live promotion for McDonald's El Maco range, the duo joked it was "the blandest food you would ever have." Watts admitted, "We got off air and it was a big deal, I think we lost them $1 million." The pair, best known for their shows on Triple J, Nova, and Triple M, parted ways in 2009 after more than a decade together.
