A new quiz challenges sports enthusiasts to identify sports purely by their distinctive sounds, from the thwack of a cricket bat to the roar of a Formula 1 car. The quiz, created by Lottoland.co.uk Sportsbook, comes after a survey of 2,000 sports fans revealed the most satisfying sounds in sport.
Most Satisfying Sounds in Sport
The cheer of a stadium rising after a last-minute win was voted the most satisfying sound in sport, with 42% of respondents choosing it. It was followed by the roar of a Formula 1 car (27%) and the thwack of a cricket ball being perfectly struck for a six (27%). The research, conducted by OnePoll.com, also found that almost a quarter (24%) believe football produces the most enjoyable sounds, followed by Formula 1 (14%) and tennis (13%).
Sound and Enjoyment
Interestingly, four in 10 (38%) said sporting sounds influenced their enjoyment of watching sport, with one in five going as far as to say they have watched or listened to a sport because they enjoyed the sound of it. Of those polled, 45% said they found the sounds of live sports relaxing, with 44% finding repetitive sporting sounds such as a long tennis rally or the sound of rowing strokes particularly calming.
Why Sports Sounds Are Relaxing
When asked why the sounds of sport were relaxing, the feeling of being part of something (38%), the comforting atmosphere created by the crowd (36%), and the steady rhythm of play were all top reasons. Half (49%) also feel you don’t need to be a sports fan to enjoy the sound of sport.
Confidence in Identifying Sports by Sound
Overall, six in 10 (59%) are confident they would be able to identify the main sports from just the sounds of the game. A spokesperson for Lottoland.co.uk Sportsbook said: “Sports crowds are subtly different. However, this is what makes them so recognisable. Each atmosphere has its own distinct reactions, rhythms and chants.”
Least Enjoyable Sounds in Sport
On the other side, boxing was voted as producing the least enjoyable sounds (14%). The Lottoland spokesperson added: “Sound is a key part of the sports experience. Every sport has its own unique soundtrack, from the background buzz of a crowd to the repetition of play. It’s what draws us in, and can shape our enjoyment more than we realise – it’s no wonder so many of us can recognise the sport just from the sound.”
