Eddie Howe is unlikely to be short of job offers when he returns to football management, having previously been linked with Manchester United and England. Chronicle Live understands that Howe will first take a break from football, with the Magpies having a plan in place for his potential departure for the last fortnight.
Matthias Jaissle is set to succeed Howe, who leaves the club after five years in charge; reports of his decision emerged on Thursday morning. The 48-year-old made some telling claims after last night's 4-1 pre-season friendly defeat to Bristol City, with transfers seeming to be one main reason he has left.
While raising nearly £300m from selling Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, it has been difficult for Newcastle to compete on all fronts, and this could become more difficult with Bruno Guimaraes, a concrete target of Arsenal.
Howe's impressive stint should not go unnoticed, as he delivered a Carabao Cup and two seasons of Champions League football. He struggled during those European campaigns, but he should have no major issues getting another high-profile role, and here are just a few places he could be next.
Manchester United
Eddie Howe has also been linked to the Manchester United head coach position over the last few years. Michael Carrick was only appointed permanent head coach earlier this year, but a quick move for someone like Howe cannot be ruled out if things do not go to plan for the club's former midfielder.
He is likely to be given at least one season following his impressive interim spell but that could work in Howe's favour given his plans to take a break from football. Perhaps the only factor not in his favour is the struggle he has found when balancing Premier League and European football, as evidenced at Newcastle.
England
There are barely any elite-level English coaches but Howe is arguably the best and may succeed Thomas Tuchel as head coach of the national team if he cannot find joy at Euro 2028. Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes has already made his stance clear on whether he could be the Three Lions' boss soon. He told FourFourTwo last May: "He is by far the best European coach I've had. No doubt he'll be England manager one day. As a person, he's a sensation – a true legend. He's gifted with strong man-management skills. He knows exactly the best way to talk to you in private, in the dressing room and in the press. He still has a long and promising career ahead of him."
Howe was linked to replacing Gareth Southgate but was settled at Newcastle when he departed. The FA could certainly consider him over the coming years, however.
Everton
Howe has emerged as an option for the Everton role in previous years and it could be the dream next job for him. The Toffees were so close to securing European football in the last campaign but David Moyes' side were unable to break into the top eight. Despite the incredible job he has done, supporters have grown frustrated by his tactics and comments after defeats which could mean it is the right moment for change.
Talented players such as James Garner, Illiman Ndiaye and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have seemingly left many with the belief that 13th was not good enough. Moyes has definitely earned another season but if he fails to make significant progress, Howe could feasibly step into the job after a one-year break and potentially get Everton into Europe, as he did with Newcastle.
Brentford, Brighton or Leeds United
Most Premier League teams would arguably be open to appointing Howe but Brentford, Brighton and Leeds United stand out. That is largely because all three do not have new managers and thus could seek a change fairly soon, particularly if improvements aren't made this season.
Daniel Farke kept Leeds United up but they may seek more stability going forward which Howe would undoubtedly provide. Keith Andrews had a great start but there are fears that Brentford will regress this season. Fabian Hurzeler only just signed a new contract at Brighton but like Howe, he may become frustrated by marquee player sales which could create a vacancy.
Nottingham Forest
Though Oliver Glasner replaced Vitor Pereira at Nottingham Forest a month ago, a mid-season departure given his history and the volatile Evangelos Marinakis is certainly plausible. Forest are undoubtedly a big club; therefore, it would not feel like a backward step for Howe. It could actually turn out to be the ideal job for him given their ambitions to become a club that regularly qualifies for Europe and will spend money to get there.
