In a clip shared by TMZ, Cain told Dr. Oz on live television: 'There are tons of people here, it’s a huge space, and it’s just going to get more and more crowded as the week goes on.' However, the footage showed only around two dozen people near the stage, with a vast expanse of empty green grass behind them.
Cain doubles down despite evidence
Despite the sparse crowd, Cain insisted the event was well-attended. 'Everybody was like, “Oh, there’s nobody there”; there’s tons of people around here. And it’s going to get more and more crowded,' he said. He added that he was trying to be 'unifying' and praised the event as 'great in our nation’s capital.'
Event plagued by issues
The Great American State Fair was held on Washington’s National Mall to celebrate America’s 250th birthday, billed as a patriotic showcase with family attractions, live entertainment, and exhibits. But the fair faced multiple problems. One photograph from Saturday showed rows of empty chairs and just two people watching musician Jason Hershey perform. The fair lacked roller coasters and carnival rides, featuring only a 110-foot Ferris wheel and a plywood 'Triumph Arch.'
Trump claims 45,000 attendees, but photos show otherwise
Trump headlined the event with a 'rally to end all rallies' after several musicians pulled out, joined by bands from the Marine Corps and the Army. He claimed on Truth Social that the crowd was 'packed to the brim' with 45,000 attendees. However, NBC News reported attendance was 'nowhere near' that figure. The Washington Post noted that the crowd 'thinly covered an area about the length of the National Museum of American History, smaller than some summer outdoor movie screenings.'
