Zoe Ball Shares Grief Journey After Three Devastating Losses

BBC Radio 2 presenter Zoe Ball has spoken candidly about the profound grief she has experienced following the deaths of three loved ones over a 14-year period. The 55-year-old host, who lost her mother Julia Peckham, former partner Billy Yates, and stepdad Rick, offered words of comfort to listeners navigating similar heartbreak.

Loss of Her Mother and Stepdad

Zoe’s mother Julia Peckham died in 2024 at age 74 after battling pancreatic cancer. Her stepdad Rick passed away from motor neurone disease (MND) in 2012, a condition that causes progressive muscle weakness with no known cure. According to the NHS, MND is typically life-shortening, though treatment can help manage symptoms.

Former Partner Billy Yates

In 2017, Zoe faced further tragedy when her former partner, BBC cameraman Billy Yates, died by suicide at age 40. On her podcast Dig It with Jo Whiley, she revealed that maintaining close ties with his family and friends has brought immense comfort. “I’ve been so lucky to have all of his wonderful family and friends stay really close,” she shared.

Advice for Those Grieving

During the podcast, Zoe addressed listeners who have reached out sharing their own stories of loss. “It breaks my heart to know someone else will go through that,” she said. She emphasized finding solace in others further along in their grief journey. “You’ll find people who have gone through exactly what you’re going through and they will understand exactly what you’re going through at that moment, because they’ve been there.”

Finding Joy Again

Zoe reassured listeners that happiness can return. “It’s so tough but further down the line, you will find happiness again and you will find joy again, that will happen.” Her own experience led her to step down from the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show in 2024 after her mother’s death.
