Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has faced criticism after mocking a disabled New York Times reporter at a rally in South Carolina. Trump performed an impression of Serge Kovaleski, who has arthrogryposis, a congenital condition affecting joint movement.
During the rally on Tuesday night, Trump referenced a 2001 article by Kovaleski to support his disputed claims that thousands of Muslims in New Jersey celebrated the 9/11 attacks. Trump called Kovaleski 'a nice reporter' before mimicking his physical mannerisms, waving his arms with hands at an odd angle and saying, 'Uhh I don't know what I said. Uhh I don't remember.'
A New York Times spokeswoman called the mockery 'outrageous'. Kovaleski, who covered Trump in the late 1980s and early 1990s, said he was not surprised by the behaviour, calling it 'low-rent'. The mayor of Jersey City has also refuted Trump's claims about celebrations.
Trump's campaign has not officially commented, but the businessman took to Twitter to attack the New York Times.
