Scott Mills Dismissed by BBC Following Historic Sexual Offence Allegations
The BBC has terminated the contract of former Radio 2 presenter Scott Mills after allegations surfaced regarding historic serious sexual offences. The Metropolitan Police investigated claims involving a boy under the age of sixteen, with alleged incidents occurring between 1997 and 2000.
Mills, aged 53, was removed from airwaves on March 24, 2026, following a complaint lodged with the corporation concerning his personal conduct. The broadcaster, who had enjoyed a nearly three-decade career at the BBC, was subsequently sacked over the weekend of March 29-30.
Police Investigation Timeline Revealed
In December 2016, the Metropolitan Police launched an investigation into Mills after a referral from another police force. The probe focused on allegations of serious sexual offences against a teenage boy, with reported incidents taking place between 1997 and 2000.
At the time of the alleged first incident, Mills was approximately 24 years old and working at Heart FM. He joined BBC Radio One just one year later, in 1998, marking the beginning of his long tenure with the broadcaster.
Questioning and CPS Decision
After a two-year investigation, Mills was questioned under caution by police in July 2018. The Metropolitan Police submitted a full file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) for review.
However, in May 2019, the CPS determined that the evidentiary threshold for bringing charges had not been met. Consequently, the police closed the investigation, approximately two years and five months after the initial report was filed.
BBC's Sudden Action and Fallout
Following the complaint in March 2026, BBC bosses made the abrupt decision to take Mills off air during an investigation into the claims. Gary Davies temporarily replaced him on the Radio 2 breakfast show, without providing details about Mills' return.
Listeners expressed concern as Mills remained inactive on social media and absent from broadcasts. On March 30, the Mirror revealed that Mills' employment had been terminated due to allegations related to a historic relationship dating back more than a decade.
The BBC released a statement confirming, "Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC," while declining to comment further on individual matters. The Metropolitan Police also reiterated details of their investigation in a separate statement.
It was later confirmed that the boy at the centre of the allegations was under the age of sixteen when the alleged offences took place. This development has cast a shadow over Mills' once-prominent career in entertainment, leaving fans and colleagues grappling with the revelations.
