Victoria Police are investigating allegations that American pop star Katy Perry sexually assaulted Australian actor Ruby Rose at a Melbourne nightclub in 2010. The claims, made by Rose on social media this week, have been vehemently denied by Perry's representatives as 'dangerous reckless lies'.
In a statement on Wednesday, Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the Melbourne sexual offences and child abuse investigation team are examining an alleged historical sexual assault that occurred at a licensed premises in the city's CBD. 'As the investigation remains ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage,' the statement added.
Rose first made the allegation in a comment on a social media post about Perry's reaction to Justin Bieber's Coachella set, writing: 'Katy Perry sexually assaulted me at spice market nightclub in Melbourne. Who gives a shit what she thinks.' She later stated on Threads that she had finalised her reports to police and could no longer comment publicly on the matter, describing the process as 'quite the relief'.
Perry's representative responded forcefully, stating: 'The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous reckless lies. Ms Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.'
The incident allegedly took place in August 2010, when Perry and Rose were reported to have gone out in Melbourne, including to the Spice Market nightclub at the Grand Hyatt. Rose, who has not provided further details, said she can now 'start the healing process'.
