Princess Diana had an unusual item added to her wedding dress for good luck: a gold horseshoe. The 18-carat Welsh-gold horseshoe, studded with diamonds, was sewn into the back of her iconic gown, designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel, according to The Mirror.
The horseshoe, a traditional symbol of good luck, was hidden in the petticoats and could not be seen by the public. It is believed that only the designers and the princess knew about it on the day of the wedding, which took place 45 years ago on July 29, 1981, at St Paul's Cathedral in London.
Diana's gratitude to designers
Diana was reportedly extremely happy with the overall look of her dress. She called the designers to thank them after the wedding. David Emanuel recalled the call to HELLO: "After all the photographs, they went in to have the wedding breakfast, and I went back to my studio in Mayfair. All of my workroom ladies were there, so we had a glass of champagne. We had a little party and just as I’m about to lock up, the phone rings… I thought who’s calling? It was Diana! She said 'I just wanted to say thank you so much for the gown. I loved it. Prince Charles loved it. All the family loved it.'"
