A woman has revealed she hired a private detective to confirm her suspicions that her live-in boyfriend was having an affair, only to find herself desperate to win him back after he moved out. The anonymous reader, writing to Metro's agony aunt Laura Collins, said she sensed something was wrong for nearly a year when sex became mechanical and he stopped being affectionate.
She discovered he was seeing a woman 15 years his senior at the car showroom where he works. Describing her as 'awful', she said the woman wears short skirts and high heels, has bleached blonde hair and a permanent fake tan. Despite him ridiculing her behind her back, the reader believes money and flash holidays were the attraction.
When confronted with the detective's evidence, he packed up and left without explanation or apology. However, she confessed: 'I’m so bitter and angry, yet at the same time I still love my ex-boyfriend. How can I get him back?'
Laura Collins advised against reconciliation, saying the betrayal showed a lack of respect and that he would likely cheat again. 'I don’t expect you to be complimentary about the woman... but try to disregard who she is... he cheated on you for a year and would probably have carried on cheating,' she wrote.
Collins urged the woman to surround herself with supportive friends and family, and to take time to heal before being open to a new relationship with someone who will treat her properly. 'Three months is not long to mend a broken heart, but mend it you will,' she added.
