A 28-year-old woman has shared her heartbreaking story of discovering a double betrayal after hiring a private investigator to follow her long-term boyfriend.
The Suspicious Changes That Sparked an Investigation
Amy, from Melbourne, had been in a relationship with her partner for five years when his behaviour began to change dramatically over a six-month period. He started working late with increasing frequency, became emotionally distant, and began taking much longer to respond to her calls and text messages.
As her doubts grew, Amy contacted The Fox's Fifi, Fev & Nick radio show to take part in their 'Catch Them If You Can' segment. The show offers listeners the services of a private investigator to help resolve their suspicions. Amy accepted the offer, and investigator Dave was assigned to her case.
The Painful Truth Uncovered
Dave began his surveillance, initially finding nothing out of the ordinary. However, his breakthrough came when he followed Amy's boyfriend to an Airbnb property. Amy confirmed the property was owned by her boyfriend's family, and she even managed the bookings for it.
She provided Dave with the login details for the account. The investigator noticed a pattern: every few weeks, there were one-night bookings under different names, which contrasted sharply with the usual multi-night stays. "In my line of business, they're typically indicators that something's going on," Dave later explained on air.
Noting a booking for that very evening, Dave staked out the property. True to his word, Amy's boyfriend called her to say he was working late, but was instead seen leaving his office and arriving at the Airbnb around 8:30pm.
The boyfriend parked on the street and used a side entrance, potentially to avoid a Ring doorbell camera at the front. Less than half an hour later, a red hatchback arrived. A woman of a similar age got out and hurried to the same side entrance. A food delivery was made, and the pair remained inside until 1:30am.
"I did observe him walking a woman back to her car before getting into his," Dave stated. "It was then I was able to capture a photo of the two. He has his arm around the unknown woman and it wasn't just a quick hi and bye. There was some real intimacy there."
A Double Betrayal Revealed
When the photo was shown to Amy live on the radio show, she broke down in tears and had to be taken off air. The next day, she returned to speak about her betrayal, revealing the identity of the mystery woman to the shocked hosts.
Devastatingly, the woman was Amy's own best friend, a bond that had lasted since their high school years. Amy confessed she had not yet confronted either her boyfriend or her friend, paralysed by the shock of the discovery.
"I haven't been able to do anything," she said. "I'm in shock. I'm so sure that over time I'd be grateful that it all came out now rather than later. My heart hurts now."
The radio station confirmed they are supporting Amy through this traumatic period and have arranged for her to see a psychologist as part of their service.
