NBA Star Paul Pierce Confronted with Substantial Child Support and Custody Demands
Former Boston Celtics icon and NBA champion Paul Pierce is reportedly facing a significant financial and legal challenge, as court documents obtained by TMZ reveal a demand for just under $30,000 per month in child support. The request comes from Princess Santiago, an event coordinator based in Los Angeles, who initiated a paternity lawsuit against Pierce back in January.
Legal Demands and Financial Claims
In the latest court filing, Santiago is not only seeking $29,811 monthly in child support but also requesting sole custody of the child. Additionally, she has asked the judge to order Pierce to cover $100,000 for her legal fees and to undergo a DNA test to confirm paternity. Santiago has further demanded that Pierce pay half of all reasonable expenses related to the pregnancy, birth, and post-birth period, which she claims amounts to $18,846.
The documents allege that Pierce earned between approximately $195 million and $203 million in total NBA salary during his career. Santiago contends that Pierce has publicly stated his endorsement earnings were sufficient to cover his expenses, allowing him to use his NBA salary for generous expenditures on family, romantic partners, and other personal matters.
Background of the Paternity Dispute
When Santiago first filed the paternity papers in January, she released a statement explaining her actions. She said, "I filed for paternity papers after multiple attempts to resolve this privately. Paul Pierce is the father of my son, King, and I am simply asking for a paternity test so the truth can be confirmed." She emphasized that the case is not about drama or attention but about accountability and doing what is right for her child.
Recent Legal Troubles for Pierce
This paternity lawsuit adds to a series of public embarrassments for the 48-year-old Pierce. In October, he was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and another count of driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent. The incident occurred when he was found asleep at the wheel of his Range Rover SUV on a traffic-jammed highway.
On the night of his arrest, California Highway Patrol had shut down multiple lanes of Highway 101 to investigate a crash, causing gridlock for nearly an hour. After the highway reopened around 10:30 PM local time, Pierce was discovered sleeping at the wheel just south of the crash site. He later posted on social media, captioning a photo of the traffic, "Imagine being stuck in stand still traffic for 45 mins and falling asleep." He claimed he fell asleep due to being old and tired and has pleaded not guilty in the case.
Post-Retirement Career Challenges
Since retiring from the NBA in 2017, Pierce has worked as an analyst for sports cable networks, but his tenure has been marked by controversy. In 2021, ESPN fired him after he livestreamed himself playing poker with bikini-clad women while consuming alcohol and marijuana. He later joined FS1 in 2024 as a regular contributor on Undisputed with Skip Bayless, but that show was cancelled, and he moved to another program, Speak, which was also shut down.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Pierce faces mounting pressures both personally and professionally, with the child support case highlighting ongoing disputes in his post-basketball life.
