Meghan Markle has been issued a stark ultimatum by a brand expert as she deliberates whether to join Prince Harry in the UK, following the denial of police protection for the trip. The Duchess of Sussex chose not to accompany her husband to London this week for his five-day visit, amid ongoing security disputes that have left her return uncertain.
Security Concerns Halt Meghan's UK Travel
The Sussexes' decision to keep Meghan away stems from mounting safety fears. Since stepping down as senior working royals in 2020, the couple lost their armed police protection. Prince Harry had been awaiting a decision from the Risk Management Board (RMB), part of the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), regarding a security reassessment. However, just days before the trip, the couple was informed that no decision had been reached, with reports indicating a request for police protection for this visit had been denied.
It remains unclear if Meghan will travel to the UK at all, though there is hope she could still join Harry in Birmingham later in the trip.
Brand Expert Warns of Reputational Risks
With her arrival still up in the air, PR expert Nick Ede has cautioned Meghan to tread carefully if she does come to the UK. He highlighted that any misstep could negatively impact her global brand, which she has been building since launching her lifestyle company, As Ever, last year.
Mr Ede told the Daily Express: “Meghan has worked hard to establish herself outside the institution, yet she continues to use the Duchess of Sussex title, which remains one of the most valuable assets in her personal brand. It's a balancing act because the title undoubtedly opens doors globally, but it also keeps her intrinsically linked to the Royal Family she has distanced herself from.”
Advice for Long-Term Brand Strategy
The expert advised Meghan to adopt a clear, long-term strategy to avoid diluting her brand. He stated: “My advice would be to decide on one clear long-term strategy. If Meghan wants to build a lasting global lifestyle empire entirely on her own terms, then gradually placing less emphasis on the royal title would demonstrate confidence in the strength of her own name.”
Meghan has been actively promoting her entrepreneurial image, but the continued use of her royal title creates a paradox, keeping her tied to the institution she left. The security row further complicates her potential return, leaving fans and observers speculating whether she will risk the visit.
