An inquest into the death of Jay Slater, the 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle who vanished in Tenerife last year, has heard details of his final hours, including erratic phone calls and a message in which he said he was "on a mission".
Jay had travelled to the Spanish island for the NRG music festival with friends, but disappeared after leaving a club and going to a flat with two men he had met. His body was found a month later near the village of Masca. An inquest in July ruled he died accidentally after falling into a rocky ravine, suffering a brain injury and skull fracture.
Giving evidence via video link, Jay's friend Lucy Law described how the group spent their final evening together. She said Jay was "visibly intoxicated" but not "mangled". After wandering off, he sent messages saying he was at various clubs, but when she tracked him down he refused to go home, finding the situation funny.
The court also heard from Ayub Qassim, a convicted drug dealer who, along with Steven 'Rocky' Roccas, had invited Jay back to their Airbnb. Mr Qassim described Jay as "on a buzz", but said he warned him the flat was far from the strip. The inquest was adjourned earlier this year to track down witnesses.
The inquest previously heard that Jay made erratic phone calls to friends and posted wild social media messages in the hours before his death. His body was discovered in a remote national park after a 29-day search.
