Bruce Willis' Mother Marlene Celebrated as LAPD Volunteer Icon at 90
Marlene Willis, the 90-year-old mother of Hollywood superstar Bruce Willis, is being celebrated as an icon for her remarkable 22-year volunteer commitment to the Los Angeles Police Department. Known affectionately as Mrs. Willis at the LAPD's West Los Angeles station, she has dedicated her afternoons to supporting officers through clerical work and emotional support.
Two Decades of Dedicated Service
For more than two decades, Marlene has spent her Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays meticulously checking police reports for grammatical errors and making detailed notes. "I want to help so much, so much. You have no idea. You cannot imagine how much I want to help," she told NBC Los Angeles during a recent interview. Her dedication extends beyond paperwork, as she has become a cherished support system for officers, often offering hugs after particularly difficult shifts.
Despite being the mother of one of Hollywood's most recognizable actors, Marlene reportedly never discusses her famous son during her volunteer duties or involves him in her work. However, she does keep a personal connection close—a photograph of Bruce Willis hugging her serves as the wallpaper on her computer.
Recognition from Police Leadership
West LA station's commanding officer, Captain Rich Gabaldon, described Marlene as a very integral part of both the station and the broader LAPD community. "She is an icon here," he emphasized, highlighting her significant impact over the years.
Former LAPD Chief Michel Moore, who previously honored Marlene with the LAPD Volunteer of the Year award, spoke passionately about her contributions. "I think she means the very best of people that are individuals who believe in the work that our men and women do," Moore stated. He revealed that he once presented her with her own police badge, explaining, "While I can't make her a cop, I can at least give her the greatest symbol of what it means to be a cop."
Now retired and living in Tennessee, Moore shared a heartfelt message with Marlene through NBC Los Angeles: "Marlene, there are people in our lives that when you cross their path; they leave a lasting impression. You are one that has risen to the top of one of the best impressions. To you and the work you do, we will be forever grateful."
Family Connections and Personal Milestones
While Marlene considers the LAPD officers her "family," she maintains close relationships with her actual family, including son Bruce Willis, his wife Emma Heming, his ex-wife Demi Moore, and his five children. Her 90th birthday celebration in September last year was a family affair, hosted at Il Pastaio in Beverly Hills and documented on Instagram by granddaughter Tallulah Willis, who called her a "glamour-puss queen of a grandmother."
Bruce Willis, now 71, has been publicly battling frontotemporal dementia (FTD) since 2023, a condition that affects language, behavior, and personality. His family, including wife Emma, continues to provide updates on his health, with Emma recently launching The Emma & Bruce Willis Fund to support FTD research and caregivers. Despite his health challenges, the family celebrated Bruce's 71st birthday last week, with Emma sharing nostalgic photos and promoting their new charity initiative.
Marlene's unwavering volunteerism stands as a testament to her character, independent of her famous son's Hollywood legacy, earning her enduring respect within the LAPD community.
