Blake Fielder-Civil, the ex-husband of late singer Amy Winehouse, has spoken publicly about her death and their relationship in a recent podcast interview. Appearing on Paul C. Brunson’s podcast We Need To Talk, Fielder-Civil revealed that he and Winehouse were discussing a possible reconciliation in the week she died. He was in prison at the time and learned of her passing while incarcerated.
Fielder-Civil, who inspired Winehouse’s Grammy-winning album Back to Black, has long been a controversial figure. He admitted introducing her to heroin and has been blamed by many fans for her death from alcohol poisoning at age 27. In the interview, he said: “The week Amy passed, I was in jail… we were still very much talking about the possibility of reconciling again. The definitive moment I realised that wasn’t gonna happen was when I got told that she’d passed away.”
Now a father of two and living in Leeds with a new partner, Fielder-Civil has expressed a desire to reconcile with Winehouse’s father, Mitch, and “genuinely plea for his forgiveness”. However, no such reconciliation has taken place. Winehouse’s mother, Janis, has defended Fielder-Civil, describing their love as “complicated” but “intimate and genuine”.
In a separate interview on Good Morning Britain in 2024, Fielder-Civil said he would change “almost everything” about his relationship with Winehouse but could no longer bear sole responsibility for her death. “I’ve carried that burden myself for over 10 years… I’m the only person within that story that’s ever held any accountability,” he said.
