A 30-year-old woman from Leicester has been arrested at Birmingham Airport on suspicion of preparing to travel to Syria to engage in acts of terrorism. The arrest was carried out by officers from the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act.
Police are searching the woman's home and another associated address. Authorities are working with other agencies to ensure the welfare of the three children who were travelling with her.
The woman can be held for up to 36 hours before being charged, released, bailed, or taken to court for a warrant of further detention. No further details about the children or the specific nature of the alleged plot have been released.
The conflict in Syria, now in its fourth year, has claimed over 200,000 lives and displaced more than 11 million people. It involves forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad, opposition groups, and jihadist militants from Islamic State.
