Fans of The Testaments are questioning why Commander Weston still wants to marry Agnes after her disastrous meeting in Episode 7. The episode, which aired on Disney+, reveals that Agnes has been matched with older suitors, including Commander Weston, despite her crush on guardian Garth.
During their official meeting, Agnes brought up Weston's deceased wife, causing him to tense up and cut the conversation short. He explained that his wife died in childbirth, but the encounter seemed to ruin any chance of marriage. However, Agnes's stepmother Paula later revealed that Weston remains interested.
The show heavily implies that Weston's persistence stems from a desire to violently 'discipline' Agnes into submission. A flashback scene shows that Weston worked in cryptocurrency before Gilead and had multiple restraining orders for domestic violence.
Paula hints at this in a conversation with Agnes, stating: 'It seems Commander Weston likes a challenge. He still wants you. Men like that enjoy a stubborn spirit. It's no fun breaking in a horse that's docile.' This suggests Weston sees Agnes as a challenge to be broken.
Whether Weston will harm Agnes remains to be seen, but his past raises serious concerns for any woman he marries. The Testaments continues on Disney+ next Wednesday, May 13th.
