Vernon Kay has opened up about the 'grief' he receives at home after his daughter told him a particular fashion choice made him look 'stupid'. The revelation came as the BBC Radio 2 host discussed the approaching heatwave set to hit the UK over the bank holiday weekend, with temperatures forecast to reach a sweltering 33C in some areas.
Heatwave Fashion Trends
During his show on Thursday, May 21, Vernon mentioned that people were 'getting ready' for the sunshine and 'dusting off last year's swim shorts' before shifting focus to current fashion trends. He stated: 'A lot of people are getting ready for the sunshine; it's on its way. A lot of people are dusting off last year's swim shorts, etc, etc, getting ready. What's on trend, apparently, is Jesus sandals.'
One of his studio colleagues shook their head in disbelief, but Vernon insisted he was 'serious', adding that sandals were 'at the top' of the 'footwear to be seen in'. He continued: 'Jesus sandals, the old school desert stompers. Yes, honestly! Yeah, they're coming back. I'm like, "Not a chance. Not a chance. No way". Especially that classic look with socks.'
Family Reactions to Style Choices
Vernon then compared the trend to Crocs, noting, 'It's like... you know the shoes that you can put in the dishwasher to clean 'em? The ones that the kids wear? The rubber ones....Crocs. Yeah, others are available, but you know, they were the originator, weren't they? Them and socks. Like, what? I get grief around the house for wearing me slippers with socks. You know what I mean? It's a strong look.'
Mimicking one of his children's voices, he joked: 'Dad, you look stupid! Why, who cares? I'm within my own four walls. I'll do what I want! Funny.'
Family Dynamics and Changes
Vernon shares daughters Phoebe and Amber with former Strictly Come Dancing host Tess Daly, from whom he split after 23 years of marriage earlier this month. This is not the first time he has spoken publicly about his children. In April, he mentioned how he and Tess had been discussing a family shift they 'don't really want', confessing that the dynamic with their daughters was 'changing'.
The family lives in Buckinghamshire, with Vernon, Tess, and Amber at home, while Phoebe has moved to the US to study in New York. He told The Times: 'Now that Phoebe is 21 and Amber is nearly 17, our relationship with them is changing. We talk about encouraging them to leave the nest and be independent, but we don't really want them to. You have to learn to enter their world and that world has pitfalls that just didn't exist for us. When Phoebe started going out, we became acutely aware of drink spiking. I think that just didn't happen in the 90s.'
