Troye Sivan has called his new single a “love letter” to the women in his life. The 31-year-old Australian singer is set to release his fourth studio album, She’s The Best, on October 9.
On Friday, he dropped the title track, which was accompanied by a music video featuring Nicole Kidman, who he starred alongside in the 2018 film Boy Erased.
A Tribute to Women
Promoting the song and video’s release, he shared a post on Instagram which read: “Boys have come and gone, work has come and gone, but I have always, always had my girls. My whole life I’ve existed in the orbit of incredible women. This is my love letter to them.”
He said: “Walk down the street today with your headphones in and listen to this song and look around – the divine feminine is everywhere!!!! Thank god!!”
Music Video Features Nicole Kidman
The music video kicks off with a shot of fellow Australian Kidman, 59, wearing sunglasses and smoking a cigarette, exiting a car as Sivan watches her through a cafe window. The actress then enters a nightclub and walks through a dressing room as women and drag performers are seen getting ready, before she takes a seat at the bar and Sivan starts to serenade her after getting on stage.
Throughout the music video, Sivan is then seen alongside various women including RuPaul’s Drag Race winner Sasha Colby and his sister Sage Mellet. Towards the end, Kidman then points at Sivan and gestures for him to come to her on the dancefloor, with the pair then dancing together in a close embrace.
After they take a drink at a bar, he goes on to appear in full drag – with a platinum blonde hairdo and sheer white robe – standing in a kitchen with Kidman as she smokes another cigarette. The music video wraps with the pair dancing in front of a mirror, while a string of other women are shown dancing too.
Behind the Scenes
Sivan told Rolling Stone he wanted to cast Kidman in the music video as she had “always just been such a picture of the divine feminine to me.” Kidman has previously appeared in two other music videos – in 2001 for her and Robbie Williams’s collaboration Somethin’ Stupid, and in 1983 when she appeared in Pat Wilson’s Bop Girl.
She’s The Best was written and produced by Sivan, Jack Antonoff, Styalz Fuego and the 1975’s George Daniel, who is married to Charli XCX, who sings the song’s outro. He also told Rolling Stone having her included was “very meaningful.”
Sivan said in a statement that his new single was “both a celebration and love letter” to trans women, drag queens, feminine-presenting people and the feminine spirit that has shaped his life, creativity and sense of self. Speaking about the album, he said that it was “chaotic, layered, organic, troubled and alive.”
“It feels like the truest and most creative version of myself I’ve ever shared. At some point along the way, I realised – the only constant in my life keeping me somewhat sane has not been the work, or the men, but the feminine. Thank god for them,” he added.
Rising to fame on YouTube, Sivan released his EP TRXYE in 2014, followed by Wild the following year. He has since released the albums Blue Neighbourhood, Bloom, and Something To Give Each Other, which came out in 2023. Sivan also played the younger Wolverine in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and was nominated for a Golden Globe for best original song in 2018 for Revelation, which featured in Boy Erased.
