Country music newcomer Stephen Wilson Jr has defied industry expectations, releasing his debut album at 42 and building a devoted fanbase through relentless touring. His journey, marked by loss and perseverance, is now earning him critical acclaim and a nomination for New Artist of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards.
Wilson Jr's debut album, søn of dad, is a deeply personal tribute to his father, Stephen Wilson Sr, who died in 2018. The elder Wilson's final words were, 'Write a good song for me.' The album blends country, Americana, and alt-rock influences, which Wilson Jr calls 'Death Cab for Country.' Tracks like 'the devil' and 'American Gothic' paint vivid portraits of his blue-collar upbringing in Seymour, Indiana.
Before music, Wilson Jr worked as a research scientist for Mars. Encouraged by his boss, he quit to pursue songwriting full-time, signing a publishing deal in Nashville. 'The first two or three years weren't pretty at all,' he recalls. 'I didn't have a manager... I was recording songs in my closet.' Despite skepticism from industry insiders who deemed him too old, he persisted.
His breakthrough came through word of mouth and non-stop touring. He has collaborated with Noah Cyrus on 'If There's a Heaven' and Shaboozey on 'Took a Walk,' featured in the film The Long Walk. In April, he performed a striking rendition of 'The Star-Spangled Banner' at the NFL Draft.
Reflecting on his father's doubt about college, Wilson Jr says, 'To him, it wasn't possible for someone like us to be in college.' Yet he defied expectations, and now his music resonates with fans. 'I spent four years making this record about my deceased father... it's really profound for me to see the effect it's had on people,' he says.
