Spice Girls Reunion 'Closer Than Ever' Says Mel C

Melanie C has declared that the iconic Spice Girls are now nearer to a full reunion than they have been in many years, offering fresh hope to devoted fans longing for the group's return. The singer, famously known as Sporty Spice, shared her optimistic outlook during a candid radio appearance, stating: "I'm always keeping my fingers crossed."

Heart Breakfast Interview Fuels Speculation

Appearing on Heart Breakfast this Friday, the 52-year-old pop star addressed the growing rumours about the band's future, particularly as this year marks three decades since their groundbreaking hit Wannabe was released. The Spice Girls, formed in 1994, rapidly ascended to global superstardom, dominating charts worldwide with anthems like Who Do You Think You Are? and Viva Forever. The original lineup featured Melanie Chisholm (Mel C), Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham, and Geri Halliwell-Horner.

Recent Gathering Sparks Fan Excitement

Speculation intensified last week when Emma Bunton, beloved as Baby Spice, celebrated her milestone 50th birthday alongside bandmates Mel C, Victoria Beckham, and Geri Halliwell-Horner. A photograph of the four Spice Girls together, shared across their Instagram profiles, triggered a flood of enthusiastic comments from followers, reigniting discussions about a potential reunion.

During the interview, host Amanda Holden directly questioned Mel C about the possibility of the group reuniting. The singer reflected on their 2019 Spice World stadium tour, which notably proceeded without Victoria Beckham's participation. "Looking back to 2019, when we did our stadium tour, Victoria wasn't with us. So she has to have that experience," Chisholm explained, hinting at unfinished business for the fashion icon.

Nostalgic Celebrations and Absent Friends

Chisholm also referenced the recent birthday celebration, adding: "I'm sure lots of your listeners out there saw the picture from last weekend. We were celebrating Emma's birthday." Addressing the absence of Melanie Brown (Scary Spice), she noted: "We missed Melanie B, she wasn't there sadly, but the four of us were and it was so lovely. It was a big birthday, so you feel very nostalgic."

Teasing the prospect of a complete reunion, Chisholm reiterated her positive stance: "We're probably closer now than we have been in a very long time and I'm always keeping my fingers crossed." This statement has amplified anticipation among the group's extensive fanbase, who have eagerly awaited news of a comeback.

Legacy of Chart-Topping Success

The girl group's debut single, Wannabe, launched them to international fame in 1996, followed by further chart-toppers including Stop and 2 Become 1. After two phenomenal years at pop music's pinnacle, Geri Halliwell-Horner (Ginger Spice) departed in 1998, citing "differences between us". The remaining members announced an indefinite hiatus in December 2000.

Despite this, the Spice Girls have reunited for several landmark events, most notably performing at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Summer Olympics and embarking on their Spice World tour in 2019. These sporadic appearances have consistently fuelled speculation about a permanent return to the stage, with fans hoping the 30th anniversary of Wannabe might provide the perfect occasion for a celebratory reunion tour or new music.
