RAYE wins Mercury Prize 2026 at Newcastle Arena

RAYE was named the winner of the 2026 Mercury Prize for her album 'This Music May Contain Hope' at Newcastle's Utilita Arena on Thursday night, prompting wild celebrations as the audience rose to their feet.

The ceremony featured two North East acts among the finalists, JADE and Knats, who both received strong ovations from the packed crowd. JADE's performance of 'Angel of my Dreams' was a standout moment, with the song having surged in popularity this week following the Victoria's Secret fashion show. However, after all 12 acts had performed, the judges selected RAYE as the winner.

RAYE's Performance and Surprise Win

RAYE was among the first acts to take the stage, performing 'I Hate The Way I Look Today' with her band, impressing with her vocal range and stage presence. Coming into the ceremony, Olivia Dean and Nia Archives were the joint favourites, but the night ultimately belonged to RAYE.

The singer appeared stunned as she accepted the accolade, thanking the musicians she worked with and reflecting on how she retained the opportunity to record seven-minute songs featuring brass and strings.

North East Representation

While there was no North East winner this year, the presence of JADE and Knats as finalists highlighted the region's musical talent. Both acts received enthusiastic receptions from the arena audience, with JADE's performance particularly praised.

The event marked a significant night for the Mercury Prize, with RAYE's victory capping an evening of celebration at the Newcastle venue.
