A mural celebrating comedy legend Eric Morecambe has been unveiled to mark what would have been his 100th birthday. The artwork, which features the iconic comic alongside his long-time partner Ernie Wise, is located in his namesake Lancashire home town. Inspired by a classic archive photograph from a vintage Radio Times, the mural was revealed by his children, Gary and Gail, at Johnny’s Bar in the heart of the seaside resort.
Family Tribute
Gary Morecambe expressed his emotions at the unveiling, stating: “Dad and Ernie created something truly special together, built on friendship, respect and a shared love of making people laugh. To celebrate that partnership during the centenary weekend, and in Morecambe itself, feels incredibly fitting.”
A Storied Partnership
Born John Eric Bartholomew on May 14, 1926, in Morecambe, Lancashire, the comedian adopted his hometown as his stage name. He met Ernie Wise in 1940 when both were teenagers, booked to perform in the same Nottingham stage show. Over the next 43 years, they became one of Britain's most beloved comic double acts, captivating audiences through stage, film, radio, and television. Their television specials attracted record-breaking audiences, including over 27 million viewers for a single episode. The partnership ended abruptly with Morecambe's sudden death in 1984 at age 58; Ernie Wise lived until 1999.
Centenary Celebrations
The mural is part of the broader Eric Morecambe 100 celebrations in the town, which include performances of the West End theatrical hit Eric & Ern at Morecambe’s Winter Gardens over the weekend. Gary and Gail will also participate in a discussion about their father's legacy on Saturday, while guided walks along a new Eric Morecambe walking trail and a musical tribute from Morecambe Brass Band are planned. Additional events and activities are expected to be added throughout the year.
David Waddington, chairman of Morecambe Business Improvement District, commented: “This mural is a brilliant way to celebrate Eric’s 100th birthday and create something lasting for the town. Eric Morecambe remains an iconic figure not just locally, but nationally, and it feels right that we mark this milestone with a legacy project that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come. It's also a fantastic example of what can be achieved when local artists, businesses and the community come together to celebrate Morecambe's heritage.”
Councillor Lee Bradbury, chairman of Morecambe Town Council's festivals, sponsorships and events committee, added: “The Eric Morecambe 100 programme includes events and activities dreamed up by individuals and organisations from many different walks of Morecambe life, with the blessing of Eric Morecambe's family. The enthusiasm and love for Eric and what he means to this town is clear to see - and the town council is proud to be supporting as many events and activities as possible, whether through direct funding or logistical support. We anticipate continuing to work with partners and building the programme throughout 2026. Eric will only be 100 once and we've got a whole year in which to continue the celebrations.”
