Israeli Music Legend Matti Caspi Passes Away at 76

The Israeli music scene is in mourning following the death of celebrated singer, composer, and producer Matti Caspi at the age of 76. Caspi passed away overnight at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv after a prolonged and public battle with cancer.

Family's Heartfelt Tribute

His family announced his passing in an emotional statement on Sunday, describing him as 'a beloved husband and a dear father'. They expressed profound grief, stating: 'With aching hearts and deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved husband and dear father. The light of our lives has gone out. His love and his creativity, which he always gave, will remain a part of us forever. You were and will remain the essence of our existence.'

A Prolific and Enduring Musical Legacy

Over a career spanning six decades, Matti Caspi, who was born in Israel in 1949, released approximately 1,000 songs and dozens of albums. He was also a respected musician and producer for other artists. His iconic works, which have become staples of Israeli culture, include:

  • Brit Olam (Eternal Covenant)
  • Ekh Ze SheKochav (How Is It That a Star)
  • Hine Hine (Here Here)
  • Lo Yadati SheTelchi Mimeni (I Didn't Know You Would Leave Me)
  • Shir HaYonah (The Song of the Dove)

During the Yom Kippur War, Caspi notably toured IDF bases with the legendary Canadian Jewish singer Leonard Cohen, who later arranged his song 'Lover Lover Lover'.

Public Struggle with Illness and Treatment

In his final months, Caspi was open about his health challenges. In May, while suffering from metastases, he cancelled upcoming performances and initiated a $1.5 million crowdfunding campaign to fund experimental treatments not covered by Israel's national healthcare system.

He explained at the time: 'The doctors are focused on extending life, but I am determined not to give up — and to win. It's not easy to admit that you need help. It's also quite frustrating that in the Israeli reality, in order to receive treatment you have to look for sources of funding. I chose an alternative path that includes things that aren't in the health basket at all.'

By July, his illness had progressed to the point where he could no longer play the piano or guitar, yet he remained defiant, stating at a concert in his honour: 'I'll fight in every way possible, I'll be stubborn to the end.' He continued to engage with fans on social media until November, promoting a new songbook and expressing hope for recovery.

National Mourning and Tributes

Israel's Culture and Sports Minister, Miki Zoha, led the tributes, calling Caspi's music 'a soundtrack of love and hope' for generations. In an official statement, Zoha said: 'With great sorrow, we bid farewell today to Mati Caspi, the towering singer and songwriter who touched the souls of us all and gave us classics that became enduring pillars of Israeli music. Songs such as 'Brit Olam' and 'Ma Zot Ahava' accompanied generations of Israelis through their most beautiful and most painful moments. His legacy will continue to resonate for many years to come. May his memory be a blessing.'

The passing of Matti Caspi marks the end of an era for Israeli music, leaving behind a vast and cherished body of work that will continue to inspire and comfort listeners for generations.
