Lil Nas X has posted a video update on Instagram saying he is 'doing much better' after spending several months in rehab following his arrest last summer. The 27-year-old musician, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, said he has returned home to Atlanta and Los Angeles and is receiving treatment for bipolar disorder.
In the nearly three-minute clip, Lil Nas X revealed he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and now has a therapist and psychiatrist. 'When I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis, I feel like I had known for the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit to it,' he said. 'I’m feeling better. I’m creating freely. And there’s less fear in my heart.'
The update comes after an incident in August when police responded to reports of a naked man walking on a busy Los Angeles boulevard. Authorities allege Lil Nas X charged at officers, injuring three. He was arrested, taken to hospital for a suspected overdose, and later charged with three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. He pleaded not guilty.
In April, a judge allowed him to enter a mental health diversion programme, which could lead to the charges being dismissed if he complies with treatment and obeys the law for two years. The court found the encounter was linked to his bipolar disorder and was an aberration from his usual behaviour.
Lil Nas X, best known for the 2018 hit 'Old Town Road', which spent a record 19 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, also announced new music is on the way. 'I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud,' he told fans.
