Deep Purple have postponed the remainder of their UK and European tour, including a scheduled Manchester show, after frontman Ian Gillan was hospitalised following a medical emergency. The band were due to play the AO Arena on November 22.
Gig cancelled after singer fell ill
The legendary rock group were scheduled to perform in Leipzig on October 31 as part of their ongoing 'Splat!' world tour, but cancelled the concert after the 81-year-old singer fell ill. On the advice of doctors, the band have now announced that the rest of their UK and European dates have been postponed until further notice.
Singer's message to fans
In a post on X, the band shared a message from Gillan. It read: "Dear friends, thank you for all the good wishes and support over the last few days, it means the world. I had a medical problem whilst in Leipzig which required urgent attention at the hospital."
"I was hoping that I would get the all clear to hang on until the end of the tour, but there are very serious risks involved in me doing so. As a result, and on the advice of my medical team and management we have made the decision to postpone the rest of the European/UK tour until further notice."
No further details have been shared about the nature of Gillan's medical emergency or his condition. The singer added: "I'm very sorry about any inconvenience this may cause, but it's in the best interest all round. Thank you for your understanding."
