Bacon can be made extra crispy and tastier by coating it in plain flour before cooking, according to cookbook author and nutritionist Rose Reisman. The simple household staple helps absorb grease and creates a golden crust, eliminating the need for added oil.

Why flour helps bacon crisp up

Dipping bacon in flour serves as a binder, soaking up the grease from the meat and helping it keep its shape during cooking, which stops it from curling. The flour coating also creates a delicious brown crust on the bacon, boosting its flavour and crispy texture.

As an added perk, this technique allows you to skip adding oil. Just coat your bacon strips and place them on a lined baking tray before putting them in the oven. Bacon contains its own fat that will melt and cook it, and the flour coating assists in making it crispy and golden brown without requiring any additional oil.

How to make crispy bacon with flour

Posting a video on her TikTok page @rosereisman, the cook shared with her followers that a little sprinkle of flour is her secret to extra-crispy bacon. She said: “I’ve got a great hack for you. If you want to get your bacon as crispy as ever, add a little bit of plain flour. The flour not only absorbs the grease but also makes it really crispy.”

Once Rose coated her bacon rashers in plain flour on a lined baking tray, she put it in the oven at 200C for 15 to 20 minutes. Biting into a piece of the cooked crispy bacon, Rose said, “Wow! Listen to that crunch. A little bit of flour is what did it.”
